about

The opening passage sounds composed but it was not notated, only pre-envisioned abstractly. But it provides a basis for the development of musical ideas throughout the four movements. The concept behind this recording was to explore the musical technique of thematic extension through repetition. A phrase is stated and repeated, each time evolving and becoming longer or more developed. Eventually the patterns extend into an ongoing evolution of the thematic material in a free structure. This is not an attempt to be highly structured but rather to let structure guide a free evolution of the ideas.

The macro form of the piece is consciously a four movement structure, something like a standard sonata form with a fourth movement added as if it were an extended coda. The movements were performed in order with the content that developed in each being a response to the music that had come before. In other words, as much as possible I tried to craft the performance into a single continuity that was build from three or four interrelated entities. At the end of the third movement, it seemed appropriate to conclude with a more subdued ending passage.

This was recorded on October 1, 2017 at my home using a pair of Shure SM81s and a CAD M179 at the foot of the piano. Mixed in ProTools with compression (UAD Teletronix LA-2A plugin) and a very slight addition of artificial reverb (Altiverb's Jet Studio patch).
