Drop Plunk

Fiagd I love the classic voice of a grand piano if it shared the room with various incomprehensible and weird sounds.

It's like you're out on a spacewalk above the past and future, natural and man-made worlds, and then see the whole everything born of the friction of opposites.

about

Drop Plunk is a double album of spontaneous explorations of the vast potential of piano sounds - including realtime prepared piano and electronics. This album is the culmination of over fifty recent performances developing an exciting and truly innovative approach to piano performance. The album is full of exciting sounds as well as lyrical melodic ideas. It was recorded on a Yamaha G3 in his home studio and produced in his purist style of clear natural acoustic sound.

The music expresses the free improv tradition of creative composition that develops entirely in the moment without previously established structures or material. As in Hegarty's other work, the focus is on building a musical idea from one idea to the next, exploring relationships, connections and mis-connections, and discovering new sound visions. The music explores the texture that occurs as the result of overlapping sounds, sometimes captured by a Korg Kaoss Pad and looped in the background.

The free improvisation nature of these performances is carried over to the prepared sounds as well. Rather than establishing the selection and placement of the preparations in advance of the performance, Hegarty draws upon a vast collection of useful materials to employ in ways that are developed and adapted on the spot and in the moment according to the needs of the music in real time. Preparations are made and changed, altered, and replaced throughout the course of the performance.
